Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a beautifully preserved medieval German town in Middle Franconia, Bavaria. This photo shoot was done in May 2009, on a brief trip through the city. It was cold and very rainy, with brief patches of sunshine before the water descended again. I didn't have much time, so this is basically a trip to the Medieval Justice Center (aka Torture Museum) and then back to the Wuerzburger Tor (gate on the road leading to Wuerzburg) where our hotel was.
My friend and I stayed at the Hotel Rappen. It was clean, with large modern rooms, and relatively inexpensive (with the Euro at USD1.40 nohthing is 'cheap'). The waiter at the hotel was pretty rude, but other than that it was a nice place. There are many places in the old town to stay, but if they're all booked, this was pleasant, and if your luggage is on wheels it's not a bad walk from the train station.
Also, straight down from the hotel inside the town walls (ca 200m) is a truly excellent pizza place. The Germans seem to love Italian food -- it's often easier to find pizza than sausage in a traditional German Kneipe (pub). This place was great. It looked like a hole in the wall tourist trap on the outside, but Stan was in the mood for pizza, so we went in. It was a tight squeeze through the narrow passageway but then the place opened up into the cellar and was actually quite large. It was absolutely packed with people, including many locals. I got the Pizza Diavolo (Devil's Pizza), with sharp salami and semi-hot peppers. I'm making myself hungry just describing it.
